VGM of the Week #68

Can I just say how much I love Fire Emblem: Awakening?

It's fucking amazing.

Fucking.

Amazing.

Also, There is an Adamant Ditto Review of Fire Emblem all but posted on the blog, but for those of you that do still read the blog, know that we've got some renovations planned and that review is being held onto until that's done first. As far as I'm aware.

VGM of the Week #67

Guess it's back to me for this thing and well, Valentine's Day is coming up, so let's do a song that reminds me of love and tenderness.

When it comes to "love" themed video game tunes, there's a few that come to mind. "The Theme of Love" from Metal Gear Solid 4 or "Because I Love You" from Earthbond are both excellent choices (with one being much more about love than the other) but I ultimately decided to go with the acoustic version of "The Legendary Theme" from Gitaroo Man.

Now, I've never played Gitaroo Man but I have seen footage and I do have the whole soundtrack on my computer and while it's a very strange game and most of the tracks are ripping rock anthems, this track is very mellow and very sweet. There might not be any lyrics but it's one of the few video game tracks I can think of that instantly brings images of slow dancing with a loved one or just holding someone's hand to mind. It probably helps that in the game, this song happens when the main character is just sitting by a fire with his girl.

It's a very sweet song that manages to fill me with all kinds of loving emotions with just a single instrument. It's a great track to listen to on Valentine's Day with your special someone and it's my choice for VGM of the Week.

VGM of the Week #66

Yeah, yeah. This one is from Final Fantasy X and is called Silence Before the Storm. It's beautiful.

VGM of the Week #65

Hey, it's Josh again with another VGM of the Week!

This time, I wanted to go with something that I think is just awesome...NintendoLand has a Ton of Charming Content, but I love almost every Remix that appears in the game (As well as the few completely original tracks)...

My favorite remix happens to be from a game that I have yet to play in NintendoLand, Mario Chase. The Music from Mario Chase's Chase Arena is a wonderful remix of Super Mario Bros. 3's Athletic Theme...I think all of the Bleeps & Bloops, as well as the Background music really add something to this Classic Mario tune.

VGM of the Week #64

So I guess I should probably do an N64 track this week, hmm?

NOPE.

Instead, take this hauntingly beautiful tune from Streets of Rage!

This tune just hits me. Fun fact, the first time I heard this track was actually not from a Sega Genesis but when my dad played it on an old keyboard. I immediately had to know what those sweet chords were from, and knowing is half the battle. Anyway, enjoy.

VGMotW #63

I know, I know, I'm late again. But, as promised in our Q&A vid, here's the music to accompany the god of Pokemon.

VGM of the Week #62

My turn for VGM of the Week and I actually get the first VGM of the Year. Whoa! This is a big deal. I gotta pick something great. I could do the New Years theme from Animal Crossing but Josh just did that game. I could do the Clock Town theme from Majora's Mask to represent the dawn of a new year but we've already done several Zelda themes.

So then I decided "screw it" and am just going with a theme from a franchise I just got into last year but is already one of my favorites of all time; Uncharted.

The Uncharted games are a ton of fun and really make you feel like you're on an adventure and part of that has to do with the amazing score. It sounds like it would accompany an action/adventure movie like Indiana Jones or James Bond. It's really impressive and this happens to be my favorite track from said games.

Yes, I know I pretty much picked the main theme from the most popular entry in the series but let's face it, there's a reason it's a popular theme; it's epic. It perfectly encapsulates both the feel of the games and the feel of the main character. You feel like you're on an adventure, searching for lost treasures and mysterious temples with this guy. You feel the excitement and the danger lurking at every corner. This is an amazing main theme for any game or film but it works on an even higher level with Uncharted.

VGM of the Week #61

It's a little late for Christmas and the new year is coming up... But whatever, it's still going to be Winter.

Here's to another year of Adamant Ditto.

VGM of the Week #60

If you're reading this, then the world didn't end, and the Mayans were wrong! (Until someone moves the date again...). Anyway, if you're reading this, it also means it's time for my VGM of the Week!

I wanted to do something that fits in with the Christmas season...I had a few different ones planned, with the help of my fellow Adamant Dittos, of course...Ultimately, I decided against them all, and went with one that I felt better suited Christmas, Animal Crossing City Folk's Christmas Eve Music!

From me to you all, Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! And have a Safe and Happy New Year! I'll see you all in 2013!

VGM of the Week #59

Slow going this week around the ol' Adamant Ditto Blog. Hope you've been enjoying our run through Super Mario 64. In the meantime, have another fresh 64 tune!

Snowboard Kids 2 has one of the most underrated video game soundtracks, in my opinion, and also happens to be one of the most underrated N64 games, in my opinion. I'd definitely recommend checking out the whole soundtrack, but none more strongly than this triumphant tune. Just listening to it makes me want to go snowboarding down a waterfall and drop pans on everybody. And hey, this tune is even a little wintery! Funny, that!

VGM of the Week #58

Hey, I'm early this week. But I was last last time, so it evens out. Shut up; yes, it does. So Did you here about Mega Man X Street Fighter? Sounds frickin' awesome to me. So to celebrate, let's pick a song guaranteed NOT to be in it. Actually, this hasn't been in any game. I just really think this is awesome, minus the thunking beat at the beginning.

Hit the jump for a killer remix.

VGM of the Week #57

Hey folks, my turn for VGM of the Week and by the time you read this, I will be in Disneyland! Yes, as you read this I am probably just now leaving the park, tired as all hell, feet throbbing, waiting for Carissa to finish shopping at the stores that conveniently stay open an hour after closing time on Main Street. It certainly is the happiest place on Earth!

And what better way to celebrate that than with a demented version of one of the happiest songs ever written?!

My choice for VGM of the Week this week had to be something Disney related and I chose to go with a Disneyland related song from the hit Wii game, Epic Mickey.

Epic Mickey might not have been everything I wanted it to be, in fact, far from it, it was plagued with camera issues, poor controls and way too many fetch quests but to give credit where credit is due, the atmosphere is amazing. The game sets up such a fascinating world and as a huge Disney buff, it's a joy to explore and see all the nods and references to both well-known and obscure Disney properties.

Now imagine my surprise when the very first boss of the game is a boss fight with a demonic version of the "it's a small world" clock tower from Disneyland. Man, that boss fight was awesome. Beyond being just a cool idea for a boss, it really is downright creepy. "it's a small world" is the happiest, most innocent ride ever conceived by human beings and this game just flipped it right on it's head. The music that plays during the boss fight, as seen above, just makes everything that much more terrifying because it's a twisted version of the "it's a small world" theme song. I absolutely love it but I can't help but feel like Walt would not approve.

Oh well, better than being stuck in "it's a small world" for 45 minutes...

VGM of the Week #56

It's another one of those back to back VGM of the Week posts!

This one is from the opening of Zone of the Enders. Zone of the Enders HD came out not too long ago but I personally didn't grab it because it was ported by an incompetent company that Konami hired because they don't give a fuck care about anything not Metal Gear Solid either. In fact, I actually immediately cancelled my preorder. I wasn't THAT hungry for the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo (which I got to play at a friend's house who did purchase ZOE:HDC and even thought it was awesome, it was incredibly short). The original PS2 games could barely run on their original hardware so I was hoping they'd be able to get 60 FPS on current hardware. Nope. The PS3 version runs like shit. It runs better on 360 which doesn't make any god damn sense to me. The game was originally on Sony hardware, how does it run even worse now? Yeah. Get out of here.

Anyway, this song is great. I really like The Zone of the Enders series. Most people just remember it as that game that comes with the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo but it was actually pretty good. I've heard the second one was better but I never got the chance to play it... WOULD'VE BEEN NICE IF I COULD ON PS3 IN AT LEAST 720p AND PROPER FRAME RATE. However, I have listened to the opening theme for the second game and I will say, it's not as good as this one.

VGM of the Week #55

It's that time of the week again! Time for some awesome VGM goodness! This time, I'm picking a tune from Super Mario 64. I decided to go with Bowser's Road.

This tune has always pumped me up for the coming Battle with Bowser, as it sounds kind of like a Battle March.

VGM of the Week #54

Hey gang! Paper Mario: Sticker Star comes out today! Be sure to check out my review of it, but in the meantime, enjoy one of my favorite tunes form the game!

Not much to say about this one, it's just a catchy little ditty that I've caught myself humming all the time while playing through the game. I had trouble deciding between this or Decalburg's theme, but ultimately I went with this one. One thing that's very cool is that the song changes to match the theme of the world you're in.

At any rate, enjoy!

VGM of the Week #53

I know, I know, it's late. I've had several 4am shifts in a row and I haven't gotten a chance to hit my computer until just now. So I literally opened up my favorites on Youtube and picked the first one O haven't shared already. I think. I hope.

VGM of the Week #52

Somehow I got lucky enough to get the Sunday right before Halloween for my VGM of the Week so I knew I had to do something spooky. But what kind of spooky music can I pick being a guy who is too big of a chicken to play scary games?

Frantic Factory. That's what.

While Donkey Kong 64 is far from a scary game, the Frantic Factory stage used to scare the crap out of me when I was kid. I don't know, something about the dark corridors, the living toys, the giant machinery it was very atmospheric and that atmosphere was scary. I mean, when you're 10.

As an adult, I realize the reason I probably found this stage so creepy was because of the music. This little ditty is so chilling just in the way it presents itself. From the the wind-up toy noise at the beginning to the music-box like chimes that follow, it's very creepy and fits the stage brilliantly. It still kind of gives me the creeps even at 21 years old. But that also makes it my favorite music track in the game.

I love Donkey Kong 64 and I don't give a damn what anybody else thinks of it and this track is awesome.

VGM of the Week #51

I'm writing this way early in advance so when it's 5 weeks later, I don't forget! This one comes from probably the most underrated Castlevania game with the most underrated soundtrack, Harmony of Dissonance on the GBA. It's the music that plays on the Name Entry screen.

Like my last VGM post, Batman: Arkham City, why bother even loading up your game when you can sit and listen to this!

VGM of the Week #50

Final Fantasy X is one of my all-time favorite RPGs...Yes, I know, I already said Final Fantasy IX is my favorite, but Final Fantasy X's not far behind. It was one of the first video games that I know of that had a fully voiced cast...At the time, it was also the most beautiful game I had ever laid eyes on.

I can honestly say that I can't wait for the HD Remake..Assuming we actually see it! I want to replay it so badly, and I want to do it in HD! Anyway, onto the actual track...I love it! It's the first piece of music you hear in Final Fantasy X, and I think it's the most memorable.

VGM of the Week #49

Slow week on the Adamant Ditto Blog, as you can see by our back-to-back VGM of the Week posts. That's okay - you can enjoy this stellar track from Goemon's Great Adventure while you read my review of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2!

The entire Ganbare Goemon series has consistently fantastic music, blending traditional Japanese shamisen and taiko drums with modern synthesizer and composition. It's always a perfect fit for the setting and always gets me totally pumped up for some extra-difficult platforming. Burning My Soul is my favorite track from Goemon's Great Adventure, though it's appeared in multiple games in the series. One of my favorite tracks, so check it out.
